What is Dialectical Behavior Therapy?  What Can I Expect?
 
If you are clicking on this link, you or someone you love are most likely in severe emotional pain. While this is not true for everyone, you may even self harm and think about suicide. Perhaps you have attempted suicide.  Most people with Borderline Personality Disorder have been suffering for many years, and have found that providers have not understood their experience, or do not have the tools to help. In the years that I have been providing DBT, I have found that it has been helpful for many if not most of the client's I have met in ending the suffering and moving on to develop the life they have wanted to live.  My personal goal is that client's leave therapy confident that they have the tools they need to achieve life long goals, and the resilience needed to weather future storms. 
 
If you are thinking about beginning a course of DBT treatment, it is a considerable commitment.  It will include 1x weekly individual therapy for at least one year in addition to one time weekly DBT skills class for 2-2.5 hours. Homework is assigned weekly both by the individual therapist and by the group as DBT therapy involves learning and practicing new skills every week between sessions.  Most of the work of the treatment is accomplished outside of therapy, and this will require a great deal of your energy. 
In addition to individual therapy and group skills practice, DBT treatment includes between session skills coaching with the therapist to help you generalize your skills into your daily life.  In addition the therapist is typically a participant in a weekly consult team to support them in the delivery of the treatment. 
 
In my practice I offer the individual DBT therapy and refer to several groups in the Seattle area that I know are adherent to the treatment. I do offer between session skills coaching as needed (charge pro-rated) and participate in a weekly DBT consult
with Maple Leaf DBT consult team.
